Parts Work/ IFS Therapy in Colorado

How IFS helps with OCD

IFS helps us to identify the parts of you that experience obsessions, and the parts of you that engage in compulsions. It’s a gentle way of getting to know these parts and why they operate the way they do. Through this process, you can build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with these parts. This relationship allows these parts to soften as they learn to trust YOU as the leader in your life, allowing them to not always feel the need to take the wheel.

This can look like:

  • Being able to notice when the parts of you that experience obsessions are triggered

  • Noticing how your obsession parts trigger the parts of you that engage in compulsions

  • “Unblending” from these parts in a gentle way to put yourself back in the driver’s seat, where YOU are the one making decisions, not your OCD parts

How IFS helps with Anxiety

Using gentle curiosity, IFS helps us learn more about the parts of you that experience anxiety, and why they experience what they do. This approach allows us to create a relationship with these parts, and to nurture them in a way that they may not be used to. When we nurture our anxious parts they often begin to soften and relax as they feel seen and understood.

Your new relationship with anxiety can look like:

  • Understanding the reasons why parts of you feel anxious

  • Appreciating the function of anxiety and what its trying to do for you

  • Being able to nurture yourself when you feel anxiety, from a place of groundedness and self-love

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

“A part of me craves structure and control, and another part of me just wants to go with the flow.”

“A part of me wants to keep this person in my life, and another part of me wants to cut them off.”

“A part of me wants to go out and be social, and another part of me wants to stay in and be alone.”

Does this feel familiar?

We all have many “parts” of us, and we can experience these parts simultaneously. Parts are aspects of our personality that have unique thoughts, feelings, and perspectives.

Internal Family Systems (IFS), or Parts Work, normalizes this complexity and multiplicity within us. IFS regards these parts like members in a family, all impacting the whole. Using mindfulness techniques and curiosity, we can explore and get to know the many parts of us, which deepens our overall understanding of ourselves and cultivates self-compassion.
