Phobia Therapist Denver, CO
Online Therapy for Phobias and Fears in Colorado
Experiencing this degree of fear is absolutely terrifying…
And it’s changed the way you move through your life in ways you never expected.
You go to great lengths to avoid whatever it is that causes you to feel this way. And it feels worth it, at least in the moment. The relief is real. But so is what comes with it: a growing sense of powerlessness, a quiet wondering that follows you around. Will you ever be able to live your life as fully as you want to?
That question doesn’t go away. It just sits there, underneath everything.
And yet, here you are…
Somewhere underneath the fear, avoidance, and exhaustion of managing it all, there is a part of you that wants something different. A part of you that remembers what it felt like to move through the world without dread shadowing every decision, without calculating what you will have to avoid next, without wondering if this is just how life is going to be from here on out.
That part of you isn’t gone. It’s just waiting.
You didn’t come this far just to keep shrinking your life around fear. Wanting more than this is the most honest, courageous thing you could be feeling right now.
Meet Your Phobia, Fear, and Anxiety Therapist in Denver
Hi! I’m Alison, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Denver, CO, and I specialize in phobia therapy and anxiety disorders. My practice is completely virtual, which means you can do this work from wherever you feel most comfortable, whether that is your living room, your car on a lunch break, or anywhere else that feels like yours. No commute, no waiting room, no extra hurdle between you and the help you are looking for.
I help people with phobias overcome their fears and increase their confidence in their ability to live their lives fully. For a lot of people who find their way to my practice, fear has been quietly running the show for a long time, shaping decisions, narrowing possibilities, and chipping away at the sense that a full life is still available to them. I believe it is. And I have seen people find their way back to it, even after years of struggling.
What I hear most from people who reach out is that they feel powerless. They’re not sure things can actually change. They don’t need someone to hand them a breathing exercise and send them on their way; they need someone who understands how fear actually works and has a real plan for helping them face it. That is exactly what I’m here to do.
How Phobia Therapy Works
Together, we will make a plan to address your personal fears so you can get back to doing what is important to you. The primary approach I use is called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and it is the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for phobias and anxiety. As an ERP therapist, I won’t ask you to just push through the fear or white-knuckle your way to the other side. Instead, we work together through slow, gradual exposure to your fears while intentionally delaying or refraining from safety behaviors like avoidance or needing someone with you. This process helps build up your tolerance to fear, which over time rewires your brain and decreases the fear and anxiety response.
I also bring an Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed lens to this work. IFS is a compassionate framework for understanding the different parts of you that show up around fear: the part that panics, the part that avoids, the part that is exhausted and just wants relief. Rather than fighting those parts or trying to force them into silence, we get curious about what they are carrying and what they actually need. I use elements of IFS throughout our work together to deepen your self-understanding and encourage self-compassion every step of the way. Many clients find that combining ERP and IFS makes the work feel more whole, more human, and more sustainable.
Here is what that process can look like in practice:
- We identify the specific fears, situations, or triggers that are driving your avoidance and shaping your daily life.
- We build a personalized plan together that feels manageable, moving at a pace that challenges you without overwhelming you.
- We practice gradual, supported exposure to those fears so your nervous system learns that it can handle them.
- Along the way, we use elements of IFS to understand the parts of you that have been working so hard to keep you safe, deepening self-understanding and self-compassion.
- You slowly get back to living your life, learning that you can do hard things!
The people I work with report feeling more confident and more skilled at navigating fear. They understand how the fear cycle works and how to interrupt the patterns that have been holding them back. They no longer have to live in fear. They can do the hard, scary things, and they feel happier and more fulfilled because of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is online phobia therapy and how do I know if I need it?
Phobia therapy is a focused, evidence-based approach to helping people who experience intense, persistent fear of specific situations, objects, or experiences. If a phobia has started to influence where you go, what you do, or how freely you move through your life, therapy can help. You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to reach out. If fear is making your world smaller, that is reason enough to start a conversation.
What is ERP and why do you use it for phobias?
ERP stands for Exposure and Response Prevention. It is the most well-researched, effective treatment available for phobias and anxiety disorders. Rather than helping you avoid or manage around your fears, ERP works by gradually and gently helping you face them in a supported, structured way, while intentionally refraining from safety behaviors that keep the fear cycle going. Over time, your nervous system learns that it can handle the things it has been dreading, and the fear loses its grip. Many clients find this approach feels different from other therapy they have tried. It is hard work and it is also incredibly empowering.
What does IFS-informed mean, and how does it fit with ERP?
IFS stands for Internal Family Systems. It is a compassionate framework for understanding the different parts of yourself that show up in difficult moments: the part that panics, the part that avoids, the part that is exhausted and just wants peace. When used alongside ERP, the IFS lens adds a layer of self-understanding and self-compassion to the work. You are not just retraining your nervous system; you are also getting to know yourself better along the way. Many clients report that this combination makes the work feel more whole, more human, and more sustainable.
What kinds of phobias do you work with?
Phobias can take many forms, and no fear is too specific or too unusual to bring to therapy. Whether your fear involves animals, heights, flying, medical situations, social settings, or something else entirely, the ERP process is adaptable to your specific experience. If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing qualifies as a phobia, that is a great question to bring to a consultation call.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
No, all of my sessions are held virtually. This means you can access phobia therapy and anxiety treatment from anywhere in Colorado. Many clients find that doing this work from the comfort of their own space actually supports the process.
Do I have to live in Denver to work with you?
Nope! Because all sessions are virtual, I’m able to work with anyone located in the state of Colorado. If you are in Denver or anywhere else in Colorado and are looking for an ERP therapist or phobia specialist, you are welcome to reach out.
How long does phobia therapy usually take?
The length of treatment varies depending on factors like the nature of your phobia, how long you have been struggling, and how consistently you are able to engage with the work between sessions. ERP is generally considered a shorter-term, goal-focused approach compared to some other forms of therapy. Many clients begin to notice meaningful shifts within a few months of consistent work. A consultation call is a good place to get a clearer sense of what to expect for your specific situation.
What happens during a first session?
The first session is really about getting to know you. I will ask about what’s bringing you in, what your experience with fear and avoidance has been like, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether this is the right fit. There is no pressure to have everything figured out before you show up.
I have tried therapy before and it didn’t really help. How is this different?
That is more common than you might think, and it doesn't mean therapy won't work for you. It often means the approach wasn't the right fit, or the timing wasn't right. ERP is different because it is a structured, targeted approach designed specifically for these kinds of fears. It is not just talk therapy. It involves practicing new responses to fear in real time, with support. An IFS-informed approach also offers curiosity and compassion, which can foster a more loving relationship with yourself.
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
The best way to find out is to schedule a consultation call. Our conversation is low-pressure and gives both of us a chance to see if it feels like a good fit. I work best with people who are ready to do something different, even if they are scared, and who want a therapist who is warm, collaborative, and genuinely invested in their progress.
What does virtual therapy actually look like?
Sessions are held via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You join from your phone, tablet, or computer at your scheduled appointment time. Most clients find the format easy to use and surprisingly comfortable once they settle in.
